Sizing & Stretching Watercolour Paper

The reduction of absorbency in paper is called sizing. If the paper is not sized the colour would blot immediately upon application. Paper can be both internally and externally sized. Internal sizing reduces the absorbency of the paper itself whilst external sizing is a layer of gelatine which allows the watercolours to sit on the surface rather than being totally absorbed. Here colours look brighter and can be sponged and rubbed by the painter.

Watercolour paper sheets can be prepared by stretching and this will create a flat surface regardless of how much water is applied to it. The sheet will be less liable to wrinkling (cockling).

Types of Watercolour Paper - Rough, Not and Hot Pressed

Watercolour paper is available in three different surfaces to suit various techniques. Rough is the most heavily textured surface and is used by artists who prefer granulation and texture in their work. Not (cold pressed) paper is a rough sheet which has been pressed to flatten the texture. This is the most popular choice of paper with watercolourists as some texture remains but the paper holds more colour and reflects more light. Hot pressed paper provides a smoother surface and is favoured by illustrators and miniaturists.
