Round canvasses offer an unusual starting point for a painting and can work brilliantly for certain styles or subjects. The circular paintings and artworks can be seen in Renaissance art also known as Tondo (from the Italian word rotondo meaning round). Artists such as Botticelli, Raphael and Michelangelo have used round shapes for their paintings or artworks.
The circular shape would suit portraits as it echoes portrait miniatures that were a popular way of sharing someone's likeness between the 16th - 19th century until photography took over.
