Derwent Art Supplies

Derwent is a brand with an incredible heritage and is especially known for its pencils. The Cumberland Pencil Company have been producing pencils in Cumbria since 1832 and the fine pencils in the range are still made in the UK. Traditional skills are combined with state of the art manufacturing techniques to produce the finest pencils and artists’ materials.

Charcoal was first discovered in Cumbria in 1500 but it wasn’t until 1832 that pencils were produced in Keswick. By 1939 there were 72 colours in the Derwent pencil range. Landmarks in the company’s history include the production of secret pencils for bomber command aircrew during World War II, the opening of the Pencil Museum in Keswick in 1981 and the use of Derwent pencils to create the animations for The Snowman in 1982. In 2001 Derwent manufactured the world’s longest colour pencil, a 7.91m giant!

Today the range of Derwent art supplies is extensive and features fine pencils, charcoal pencils, charcoal sticks, graphite blocks, art bars and a variety of artists’ materials including sketchpads, erasers and pencil wraps for storage. There are now over 120 colours in the Derwent range. You will also discover the Inktense collection which was launched in 2006 and offers innovative bars and pencils which act like ink when water is added. We are pleased to offer a comprehensive collection of Derwent art supplies and artist pencils at Pegasus Art.
