Description
Capturing Reality
An oil painting plein air workshop with Tom Hughes
Saturday 20th April 2024
10am – 4pm
Attic Studio & Stroudwater Canal
Skill Level: Intermediates
Learn how to paint plein air with award-winning Bristol artist Tom Hughes.
We’re excited to welcome Tom Hughes as a visiting tutor to Pegasus Art. As a professional artist, who only occassionally teaches, we’re feeling very lucky that he will lead a small group out onto the nearby Stroudwater canal, just a short walk from the Pegasus Art mill. This is an exciting opportunity to learn from a talented and admired British painter. Ideally you will have some oil painting experience and an understanding of the basics, looking to improve your skills. Tom will be teaching the fundamentals of ‘painting what’s there’ or ‘capturing reality’ for plein air painters.
Topics covered will include the following:
• Choosing a subject and painting spot
• Arranging a composition
• Measuring and sightsize drawing
• Mixing colours that match what you’re seeing.
• Judging tone accurately
• Brushwork and mark making
Recommended Equipment List
• 2 – 3 10 x 8” or similar sized painting boards with a mid-toned sandy ground colour (dry). We sell Loxley canvas boards in 10 x 8” https://www.pegasusart.co.uk/loxley-linen-canvas-boards-6-sizes-available.ir which have a bit of tooth. If you want to buy your own MDF and gesso it, please do. See link to film below.
• Brushes suitable for oil colour – Tom likes filberts https://www.pegasusart.co.uk/painting-brushes-oil-paint-brushes.irc and recommends sizes 1-8 and a few riggers too, size 0 and 1. Please bring what you have.
• Brush cleaner & thinner https://www.pegasusart.co.uk/zest-it-oil-paint-dilutant-brush-cleaner-eco-solvent.ir
• Painting medium – A mix of turpentine and linseed oil in a jam jar or metal dipper. I would suggest 6 parts turps to 1 part linseed as a ballpark figure. I also add a splash of siccative to speed drying time but this is by no means essential and won’t affect the handling of the paint in any way if it's not used. https://www.pegasusart.co.uk/michael-harding-refined-pale-linseed-oil.ir
• Metal dippers https://www.pegasusart.co.uk/metal-twin-dipper-with-lids-seal.ir
• Rags / kitchen towel
• Painting box / easel
• Folding chair (optional)
• Oil paint: Titanium white, Cadmium yellow, Cadmium red, Alizarin crimson, Sap green, Ultramarine, Burnt umber (or as close as you have to these) https://www.pegasusart.co.uk/painting-oil-paints.irc
• Palette
• Easel: Tom likes to use a camera tripod with a pochade box mounted on top. He also rates Half French easels too. But bring whatever you have. We sell New Wave pochades https://www.pegasusart.co.uk/ugo-plein-air-anywhere-pochade-box-large-701-11x145.ir and also Jakar folding easels https://www.pegasusart.co.uk/jakar-metal-easel-folding-with-bag.ir
• Uber Ruler - £10 each, Tom will bring some with him if you want to buy one on the day
• Cap or hat / raincoat / comfortable shoes
• Jam Jars with lids – as many as you like
•Please bring your own drinks and packed lunch with you. There is tea and coffee available in the studio.
*NB: Tom will be painting on a 10 x 8” oil primed MDF panel that he makes himself. Please pre-stain your board with a mid-toned sandy ground colour. Tom thins a mix of burnt umber with a touch of ultramarine in a thin wash to stain his boards. To see how; please watch this video https://youtu.be/dmWa3mdCysQ?t=1433
