Can I really do a painting in half an hour? Yes you can!

It will deal with mixing on the go, learning the options in brush use and painting outside. Even if your style is more conventional, or even new, there's a huge amount to be gained from this day session. Subjects will include landscape, coastal scenes, interiors if time, portrait too. References will be supplied. Be prepared for a busy but fun day.

'Botanical Watercolour Painting - Spring Bulbs' with Karen Green

SATURDAY 13TH APRIL 2024
10.00am - 4.00pm
£90
Attic Studio
All abilities welcome

Working from a chosen spring flowering bulb, such as daffodils, tulips and hyacinths, you will learn how to compose, draw and paint from observation, using watercolour, to create a botanical painting that reflects an understanding of the subject whilst capturing the beauty of the plant.

Karen, a botanical artist, will ease you into the workshop with some playful drawing exercises. Leading on from this, through a little bit of botany exploration, she will guide and support you to create a detailed observational drawing of the flower. With one-to-one support and class demonstrations, you will experiment with watercolour techniques and accurate colour mixing to paint your flower and finish by working in pencil to draw the bulb and root system, thinking about light and shadows.

During the session you will familiarize yourself with the materials and tools needed for botanical art and the techniques used, slowly building up layers of paint to create luminosity and depth.

About Karen: Karen works as a Botanical Artist, painting flowers and fruits and vegetables. She paints with intricate detail, retaining the technical accuracy of the plant but placing emphasis on the aesthetics and artistry. She explores themes of femininity, loss and healing through the botany and life cycle of plants; flower language and their use in medicine, folk lore and religion. After receiving a First- Class honours degree at The Arts Institute in Bournemouth, Karen went on to work as a Primary School teacher before resigning in 2011 to focus on her art career. She holds solo and shared exhibitions regularly and has been teaching botanical art workshops for over seven years.

'Capturing Reality' an Oil Painting Plein Air Workshop with Tom Hughes

SATURDAY 20TH APRIL 2024
10.00am - 4.00pm
£95
Attic Studio & Stroudwater Canal
Skill Level: Intermediates

Learn how to paint plein air with award-winning Bristol artist Tom Hughes.

We're excited to welcome Tom Hughes as a visiting tutor to Pegasus Art. As a professional artist, who only occassionally teaches, we're feeling very lucky that he will lead a small group out onto the nearby Stroudwater canal, just a short walk from the Pegasus Art mill. This is an exciting opportunity to learn from a talented and admired British painter. Ideally you will have some oil painting experience and an understanding of the basics, looking to improve your skills. Tom will be teaching the fundamentals of 'painting what's there' or 'capturing reality' for plein air painters.

Topics covered will include the following:

  • Choosing a subject and painting spot
  • Arranging a composition
  • Measuring and sightsize drawing
  • Mixing colours that match what you're seeing.
  • Judging tone accurately
  • Brushwork and mark making

Recommended Equipment List

  • Painting boards - 2 - 3 10 x 8" or similar sized painting boards with a mid-toned sandy ground colour (dry). We sell Loxley canvas boards in 10 x 8" which have a bit of tooth. If you want to buy your own MDF and gesso it, please do. See link to film below.
  • Brushes suitable for oil colour - Tom likes filberts and recommends sizes 1-8 and a few riggers too, size 0 and 1. Please bring what you have. Browse our range of oil paint brushes here.
  • Brush cleaner & thinner - such as Zest It.
  • Painting medium – A mix of turpentine and linseed oil in a jam jar or metal dipper. I would suggest 6 parts turps to 1 part linseed as a ballpark figure. I also add a splash of siccative to speed drying time but this is by no means essential and won't affect the handling of the paint in any way if it's not used.
  • Metal dippers - Such as this twin dipper with lids & seal.
  • Oil paint - Titanium white, Cadmium yellow, Cadmium red, Alizarin crimson, Sap green, Ultramarine, Burnt umber (or as close as you have to these). Explore our range of oil paints here.
  • Easel - Tom likes to use a camera tripod with a pochade box mounted on top. He also rates Half French easels too. But bring whatever you have. We sell New Wave pochades and also Jakar folding easels.
  • Uber Ruler - £10 each, Tom will bring some with him if you want to buy one on the day.
  • Rags / kitchen towel
  • Painting box / easel
  • Folding chair (optional)
  • Cap or hat / raincoat / comfortable shoes
  • Jam Jars with lids – as many as you like
  • Please bring your own drinks and packed lunch with you. There is tea and coffee available in the studio.

*NB: Tom will be painting on a 10 x 8" oil primed MDF panel that he makes himself. Please pre-stain your board with a mid-toned sandy ground colour. Tom thins a mix of burnt umber with a touch of ultramarine in a thin wash to stain his boards. To see how; please watch this video:

About Tom - Tom's work has been selected for many National art exhibitions including four selections for The Lynn Painter Stainers Prize, three showings at the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition and two solo shows at Panter & Hall, and shortlisted for the BP Portrait prize in 2014. He has won multiple awards including prizes from The Discerning Eye and the Critics Prize from the New English Art Club. www.tomhughespainting.co.uk

'Experimenting with Watercolour' with Barry Herniman

SATURDAY 11TH MAY 2024
10.00am - 4.00pm
£90
Studio One
All welcome

Enjoy a brilliant day exploring watercolour with experienced tutor Barry Herniman.

Famous for his flicking technique, Barry will show you this and plenty of new techniques, allowing you to take your watercolour painting to the next level. Sponsored by Schmincke watercolours, we'll have some samples of Supergranulated Horadam watercolours for you to experiment with to elevate your paintings. These high-quality paints contain tiny granules which produce special effects and unusual, unique colour changes.

Barry Herniman Barry Herniman Barry Herniman

The idea is to move out of your comfort zone and try a new approach to painting, learning and absorbing along the way. There will be the chance to sketch quick vignettes to loosen up and 'throw colours around' as Barry says – more than you might with a finished painting! Moving away from the traditional 'rules' of a fixed palette, Barry will give you some colour mixing tips. Barry will provide two subjects which you can work from on the day (and they will be available to send to you prior to the workshop to practice with – please ask!).

About Barry: 'I am a full time artist and have been painting landscapes and seascapes for many years both in the studio and en plein air with my trusty sketchbooks. My favourite medium is watercolour, its immediacy and transparency is hard to beat and I never tire of watching the colours mix and mingle on the paper. Landscapes are my first love but I am at home painting anything from portraits to steam locos. I travel extensively both home and abroad doing demonstrations and workshops to Art Clubs and Societies. I am also an author of Travelling Sketchbook, Successful and Creative Washes and Sketching Outdoors (2023).' www.barryherniman.com

Recommended Equipment List

  • Two pieces of watercolour paper, preferably not less than 140lb and either NOT or Rough depending on your personal preference and not less than 1/4 sheet ( 15 x 11"). Please tape your sheets to a board. I use Saunders Waterford sheet paper 190gsm NOT 56 x 76cm and Hahnemuhle Andalusia. We will be doing TWO watercolour vignettes during the day.
  • If you would like to invest in a block of watercolour paper take a look at our watercolour blocks range.
  • 2B Pencil
  • A palette with deep wells to carry sufficient colour mixes. There is a selection at Pegasus including this Buddy Cup Palette.
  • Schmincke Horadam watercolours. Recommended colours: Aureolin, Indian Yellow, Cobalt Turquoise and Helio Turquoise. See the Schmincke Horadam Watercolour 5ml Tubes.
  • Please also pick up a tube of Titanium White gouache such as Schmincke Horadam Gouache Paint 15ml Tubes - Titanium White.
  • There will also be samples of super granulated for you to try on the day.
  • Barry recommends that pigments are transparent or semi-transparent. If you're not sure bring all your colours along and he will go through them with you.
  • Brushes – Barry uses Da Vinci Cosmotops Round – they are a synthetic/sable mix and hold bags of water and come to a great point. Recommended sizes - 12, 8, 6 and 4 and a few riggers no's 4 and 2. For example Da Vinci Series 5580 Cosmotop Spin Synthetic Round Brushes.
  • Please bring a packed lunch, water, and snacks.

In conjunction with a new exhibition 'Georgia O'Keeffe: Memories of Drawings' at New Brewery Arts from 13th April – 16th June 2024, we are offering this painting workshop to celebrate one of the most important artists in 20th century American art, balancing abstraction with figuration in her innovative style.

Artist David 'DJ' Johnson is well known for his stunning plein air paintings – he is an adventurer who likes to climb mountains and paint extraordinary landscapes. He is fascinated with skies, horizons, light and shadow. In this way, he is very drawn to the New Mexican landscapes of Georgia O'Keefe and her enlarged flower paintings which have made such an impact on so many.

The canna lily paintings where intended to depict the way that she saw flowers – as a gardener, O'Keeffe was focused on the detail. Others brought their own interpretation to these paintings, seeing them as representations of female genitalia, but the artist always insisted this wasn't the case.

In this fun and exploratory day workshop you'll be focusing on composition, abstraction, stamen, colour, shape and tonal values. DJ will also take you step by step through various techniques, working from images he has selected, leaving you feeling inspired and uplifted! Return home with a finished (or almost finished) painting.

About DJ: DJ has developed his style through many years working in professional fine art studios – designing and producing artwork for commercial spaces, public areas and private estates around the world. He paints every day and teaches on a regular basis – he has so much energy and enthusiasm! He was shortlisted for Artists & Illustrators Artist of the Year 2016, a finalist in International Artist magazine multiple times, 2109 Leamington Spa Biennial award winner, 2019 Highly Commended Patchings Artist of the Year, 2020 Wales Contemporary Art prize winner. His workshops are great for building confidence, tackling unusual subjects and picking up techniques and tips. www.artbydj.co.uk

'Greens Without Green' a Plein Air Watercolour Workshop with Barry Herniman

SATURDAY 29TH JUNE 2024
10.00am - 4.00pm
£90
Attic Studio & Stroudwater Canal
All welcome

Enjoy a brilliant day ‘en plein air’ painting all the myriad shades of summer foliage... without using a single green!

We're delighted to welcome highly experienced tutor, author and ambassador for Schmincke watercolours, Barry Herniman, back to Pegasus Art to teach this colour mixing plein air workshop. If you are a novice watercolour painter wishing to take your skill set to the next level, this is a great opportunity. Moving away from the traditional 'rules' of a fixed palette, Barry will show you how to mix your own. Landscape painting is challenging in many ways, one of which is how to tackle 'all those greens'.

"I used to use a lot of viridian, along with a whole plethora of other greens. It's a lovely colour but one which seemed to dominate my paintings no matter how I modified it. Then I purchased a book by an American artist who mixed all her greens and that for me was an eureka moment. So now in my palette I don't have a single green, rather mixing my own depending on the scene in front of me."

Barry will start the day in the Attic Studio with an introduction before heading out onto the canal and giving you a short demonstration.

  • A piece of watercolour paper, preferably not less than 140lb and either NOT or Rough depending on your personal preference and not less than 1/4 sheet (15 x 11"). Please tape your sheet to a board. For example, I use Saunders Waterford sheet paper 190gsm NOT 56 x 76cm.
  • If you would like to invest in a block of watercolour paper take a look at our watercolour blocks range.
  • Bring a watercolour sketchbook for the day. I recommend Hahnemuhle A5 landscape.

  • Brushes – Barry uses Da Vinci Cosmotops Round – they are a synthetic/sable mix and hold bags of water and come to a great point. Recommended sizes - 12,8, 6 and 4 and a few riggers no's 4 and 2. For example Da Vinci Series 5580 Cosmotop Spin Synthetic round Brushes.

Karen will ease you into the workshop with some playful drawing exercises. Leading on from this, through a little bit of botany exploration, she will guide and support you to create a detailed observational drawing of the flower, using pen work to show shadow through the 'stippling' technique. With one to one support and class demonstrations, you will experiment with watercolour techniques and accurate colour mixing to paint your flower.

Gwen John is renowned for a subtle colour palette, her unique application of paint and atmospheric interiors.

Huge lilies, flowers, and skulls filling and emerging out of the canvas are instantly recognisable as Georgia O'Keeffe. They appear deceptively simple yet the composition and subtle tonal colour changes draw you in to an intimate world.

Friday 19th April: Appreciating William Scott

Indicative of the time period they were created, William Scott is considered a leading British abstract painter. Recognisable forms are flattened, perspective reconfigured, and a breakfast table becomes a delight of colour, form and shapes.

Friday 17th May: Appreciating Lisa Milroy

Lisa Milroy is an Anglo-Canadian contemporary artist known for her still life paintings of everyday objects. Turning the mundane into the extraordinary, her work plays with colour and pattern.
