Coates Charcoal

Coates willow charcoal is a natural product which is available in a variety of thicknesses. Useful for making bold marks, the charcoal is rich, soft and dark. As a totally natural product, the charcoal is prone to breakage and is of irregular shape and size which often adds to you mark making.

About Coates Charcoal

Percy Coate first began experimenting with making willow charcoal in the 1960s. He used the willow that he grew himself and it took several years to perfect his technique. Indeed, he wasn’t ready to sell his product until the 1970s. His grandfather had started in business in the 19th century buying and selling willow crops. Coates remains a family concern and offers what has been recognised as the finest quality willow charcoal in the world.

The willow plant used for making artist charcoal grows very quickly and is ready for use after a single growing season. It takes 3 days to turn raw willow sticks into willow charcoal ready for artists to work with.

If you are searching for the finest charcoal then you can do no better than Coates willow charcoal and we are delighted to be able to feature these fine products in the Pegasus Art range.
