It is our great pleasure, once again, to sponsor The British Art Prize in partnership with Adobe and curated by Artists & Illustrators magazine, the leading art magazine in the UK.

Such broad entry requirements are unusual and welcomed – this competition is open to any level of artist, with all mediums and subjects encouraged, whether that be fine drawing, painting or digital art. The rewards for entry aren’t bad either with prizes worth £10,000, your artwork showcased at a London gallery and a feature in Artists & Illustrators magazine. Beyond that, you’ll get further exposure across publications under the same publishing banner; The English Home, London Magazine and BRITAIN The Official Magazine – that’s an audience of 1,000,000 art lovers and collectors.

The British Art Prize 2023 at Gallery @ Oxo, Oxo Tower Wharf, South Bank

Whether you’re an amateur, an emerging artist or a professional it’s an incredible platform for your artwork. The exhibition of shortlisted artists is currently showing at the Gallery @ Oxo right on the Thames until 21st January. It’s a great vibe and that’s why we are delighted to sponsor it and present our winner with a Gift Voucher for £500 at the prize giving.

Winner of The British Art Prize, Lucy Pass, for her painting ‘Tiny Pieces’.

The overall winner, Lucy Pass, receives a cash prize of £2500 courtesy of Adobe and a Royal Talens gift voucher worth £500, a six-page feature in Artists & Illustrators magazine and inclusion in the exhibition for ‘Tiny Pieces’. Second prize, awarded to Toby Michael for ‘Emma Dabiri’ is a £1000 cash prize from Adobe and a £500 gift voucher from Derwent, inclusion in A&I magazine and the exhibition.

Third Prize – the £500 Pegasus Prize voucher – was awarded to Angela Bell for her oil and coloured pencil painting, ‘Spencer & Co’. “The painting embodies the direction of my current work; the imagery, narrative, techniques and experimentation are all represented within this piece. I aim to create art that offers something more than a straightforward representation but is concerned with the minutiae of the painted surface.

I often litter my studio walls with notes that act as prompts to key components I want to address within my work, and edges, I work into the surface with coloured pencils, blades and a collection of random objects, anything that I can use to disrupt the surface. I also wipe areas of paint or subtract elements with rags and drag the paint using a ruler. I found Spencer through group@cane.yo on Instagram – it’s a reference resource for artists to find models that you wouldn’t normally have access to in real life. I had saved his photo for quite some time, working out how I would make it work.

The British Art Prize is such a varied and inclusive approach to art, the work is judged purely on the submission, not your CV or the stage of artistic practice, and is, therefore, a fresh and exciting opportunity to show with contemporary practitioners. I had a painting shortlisted last year and it was such a positive experience and I received some lovely feedback and made connections with other artists.”
