Watercolour Brush Fibres
The best choice for you will depend on what you plan to use the brushes for, your painting style and your budget. The watercolour brushes vary in their ability to hold colour and to distribute it with accuracy. Here's a brief guide to your options.
- - Squirrel holds liquid very well. Naturally tapering, squirrel hair is suitable for both washes and detailed work but the fibres are soft and so do not lend themselves to dramatic marks and precise placement. The hairs lack resilience.
- - Sable hairs have more natural spring than squirrel and so hold a better point for precision work but do not hold colour quite so efficiently.
- - Goat hair provides a cost-effective alternative to other more costly natural fibres and good quality goat hair brushes are an excellent substitute for squirrel brushes. Goat hair is soft but resilient and is suitable for a variety of work.
- - Hog bristles are able to absorb and distribute a lot of paint and are also durable. They are ideal if you are looking to apply a great deal of colour.
- - Synthetic fibres are made to mimic the qualities of natural hair but do not hold paint as well. However, they offer superior spring and long lifespans. These fibres are ideal for making crisp and bold marks and work requiring exceptional precision.
- - Synthetic/natural mixes combine the liquid absorption qualities of natural hairs with the spring and resilience of manmade fibres.
