John Lewis commission Imogen Harvey-Lewis for new store hoardings

Illustrator and tutor at Pegasus Art, Imogen Harvey-Lewis is commissioned by John Lewis

June 2018: John Lewis reveals a series of colourful illustrations, created by local artist Imogen Harvey-Lewis, on the hoardings outside its new shop in Cheltenham which opens on 18th October.

John Lewis asked Imogen, who is well known for her unique and imaginative style, to design the 2.5m x 1.8m prints to bring the hoardings on the high street to life. The prints include creative sketches of the new Branch Manager, Martin Bundy, as well as sketches of the personal styling and home design services, which will be offered in the new shop.

Imogen who has been living in Gloucestershire for just over twenty two years, commented, “This has been a fantastic opportunity to play a role in welcoming John Lewis to Cheltenham. It’s also been interesting way to exhibit my work – bringing the art gallery to the high street. There is a genuine buzz about John Lewis opening and it’s been a priviledge to help build that excitement, with my own contemporary twist as the opening approaches.”

Martin Bundy, the new Branch Manager said, “I love Imogen’s illustrations. Hoardings are often dull but she has made ours fun. I hope people enjoy looking at them and feel they brighten the high street.”

Niki Whitfield, arts coordinator who manages many projects across the region said, “It’s great that John Lewis has chosen to collaborate with people living and working in the area. This is such an innovative and interesting way to communicate with the public, bringing a welcome splash of colour to the high street.”

Imogen runs Illustration courses during the school holidays for 11 – 16 year olds. Her young spirit and genuine mentor-style approach makes her a very popular tutor. She offers young creatives the chance to explore a design led approach to art – something entirely different to what they are taught in the school syllabus. It’s a great opportunity for teenagers to explore the possibilities of design and illustration as an A-level and possible career. Working on varied projects of all sizes and subjects, means that Imogen is well placed to offer amazing advice.
