Description:
Handmade from 100% mitsumata fiber, in Japan this paper is used for backing gold leaf! It is strong enough for chine colle, collage or drawing with ink yet thin and translucent enough for layering. Mitsumata is considered to be softer and more pliable than kozo; takes twice as long as kozo to grow. Fibre is cooked in slaked lime, and dried on wooden boards. Produced as a wider sheet and then cut in half.
Usage:
Calligraphy Chine Colle Collograph Conservation Intaglio Mezzotint Photgravure Printmaking Relief Print Repair Wood Engraving
It is much more difficult – and a Japanese specialty – to make very thin even papers like these than it is to make thicker sheets. It requires tremendous care in cleaning the barks of all dross, and great skill at forming the sheets evenly. In spite of their weight, many of these papers will hold layers of ink for printmaking or drawing, and hold up very well to repeated handling. in conservation work or when wet. The finest Japanese papers are undecorated, inviting the user to have control over the finished product. These papers have great potential in the hands of artists of all kinds. Mitsumata tissue paper is part of the Washi paper family, washi is the Japanese word for the traditional papers made from the long inner fibres of three plants, wa meaning Japanese and shi meaning paper. The inner barks of three plants, all native to Japan, are used primarily in the making washi. Mitsumata is the feminine element: graceful, delicate, soft and modest. Mitsumata takes longer to grow and is thus a more expensive paper. It is indigenous to Japan and is also grown as a crop. 100% mitsumata - Mitsumata paper often has a more creamy tone than kozo, has a shorter fibre than kozo which makes it not quite as strong, and is even more absorbent than its hardier cousin. It is especially good for relief prints especially when the artist wants soft edges on printed areas rather than very clear definition.
