What is Gesso?
Gesso is a term used to describe the initial coat that is applied to the surface you intend to paint in order to prime it. Gesso protects that surface from the paint whilst enabling the paint to adhere well. Gesso is made from a combination of pigment, chalk and binder and dries to a matt, gritty finish which can sometimes be sanded to refine it. Gesso offers enhanced absorption for your pigment.
The different brands of gesso primer deliver a variety of textures, which means you may have to experiment to find the gesso which best suits your work and chosen surface. Even primed canvases may benefit from a coat of gesso as they can lack the tooth and absorbency that is required for acrylic paints. Gesso is available in both artist and student grade and is traditionally white in colour. However, black and tinted gesso is now available.
