Rod Nelson returns to teach Simple Woodblock Printing in September and launches a new lockdown printmaking DVD!
Expert printmaker Rod Nelson lives just up the hill from Pegasus Art. Luckily for us, he’s right on the doorstep and comes to teach ‘Simple Woodblock Printing’ on a two day course each year. It’s wonderful because he is such a well regarded printmaker and he is very generous in sharing his passion for printmaking with all his students.
Simple Woodblock Printing 2 Day Workshop
Friday 4th & Saturday 5th September £150
10am – 4pm in our Attic Studios. There is plenty of room to space out and operate in a safe and socially distanced manner. We will be adhering to all government guidelines.

Making prints from woodblock produces images that cannot be made in any other way. It is a fascinating and versatile art and craft of ancient origin and modern artistic relevance. Our workshop will familiarise you with techniques, processes, tools and materials sufficient to make a small print using more than one single colour. You will learn methods to ensure accurate placement of colour onto a previously printed block. It will be an eye opener for beginners and experienced artists alike. No previous experience is necessary.

There has never been a more pertinent time to learn a new skill or enjoy the meditative quality of crafting at home. Where before you may have joined a workshop or weekly group; now we are being encouraged to set up studios in our spare rooms and garages.
Nothing beats working side by side with a printmaker or tutor, but this is a great way to dip your toe in and is a great antidote to our current creative restrictions.
Learn the art of woodblock printing at home
Having authored a book by the same title in 2015 (available to buy at Pegasus Art here), he felt it was time to share his knowledge in a more accessible way. ‘Making Woodblock Prints’ is a two hour, nine part masterclass in bite size, easy to follow lessons. It’s the fast track to everything learnt over the course of 30 years!

Rod shares the stage with fellow printmaker and equally eminent authority on the subject, Merlyn Chesterman RE. Merlyn is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Painter-Printmakers, author and teacher at West Dean College of Art and Conservation. She has studied printmaking in China and exhibits internationally, with her work gracing collections at the V&A and Ashmolean Museum. Rod also tutors at Pegasus Art, West Dean College and exhibits with the Royal Society for British Artists and the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition.
They are an expert duo and their passion for this art form is evident throughout and their approach is accessible to every viewer.
Topics are worked through methodically and include:
Essential Tools, Developing your own marks, Introducing Colour, Layer Blocks with Colour. Cutting an Underblock, Inking the Block, Proofing and Editioning, Advanced Printing Techniques and Tool Sharpening.
