Dougal Kirkland: large scale drawings

Artist in Residence at John Street Gallery in Stroud, alongside Willa Hilditch and Milo Kester

Our very own Dougal Kirkland, talented artist and front of house at Pegasus Art, is currently participating in a Young Artist Residency at SVA John Street Gallery in Stroud. From 8th – 21st March Dougal and fellow artists Willa Hilditch and Milo Kester have taken over the gallery to make a series of large scale drawings.

“Drawing is a big part of each of our artistic practices. We are using the opportunity and space to work collaboratively on making large scale drawings with a focus on mark making. Drawing is an accessible and dynamic art form because it doesn’t require vast amounts of space or resources. A drawing could be intuitively etched into the earth with a stick or it may require much intimate concentration in the studio.

Creating art amidst a pandemic has been challenging but we have found a collective refuge in drawing. During this residency we aim to explore the possibilities of collaborative drawing by experimenting with size, medium and subject matter We encourage others to draw with us and we will share exercises online and via the window at SVA.”

The Young Artist Residencies were funded through the Culture Recovery Programme and allow a handful of artists the time and space to create and exhibit in a professional gallery space. Whilst the gallery is closed to the public, the residencies are viewable from the street and online.
