Marine Scenes in Watercolour and Gouache

with John Scott Martin NDD PPRBSA ARSMA FRSA

Saturday 4th July 2020

10am – 4pm

All abilities welcome

Learn how to paint marine scenes with eminent painter and new tutor, John Scott Martin.

We are delighted that John will be teaching our students how to paint nautical landscapes and marine scenes at Pegasus Art. He is passionate about this subject and has spent a lifetime recording the ocean and all that sail on it! You will be learning from a hugely experienced painter, past President of the Royal Birmingham Society of Artists, Associate Member of the Royal Society of Marine Artists and a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts. Don’t let this list intimidate you – his main aim is to imbue his love of painting and to share the many skills and techniques that he has learnt over the years. Beginners are most welcome.

What you will learn on this workshop:

-How to select a suitable image and explore composition

- How to prepare and stretch your watercolour paper

- Roughly sketch the scene in pencil and then convert it simply into colour

- Drawing lightly in full size onto the stretched watercolour paper

- Learn how to paint the sky and water freely using watercolour and horizontal brush strokes – John will show you this particular technique!

- Working from the horizon, learn how to forward paint the subjects simply, considering colour and more importantly, tone

- How to add detail using gouache

- Benefit from a final appraisal, questions and feedback

Recommended materials list:

John favours Winsor & Newton watercolours and gouache, but bring whatever you have and purchase any extra colours in our shop. His suggested palette for marine painting is: Payne’s Grey, Alizarine Crimson, Intense Blue (or nearest).

Gouache: We sell single tubes or sets at Pegasus Art.

Suggested colours: Permanent White, Lemon Yellow, Red, Raw Sienna, Sky Blue.

You will only need one or two sheets of paper to paint on – 210gsm or similar, smooth and as white as possible.

John suggests A3 size, but you could go for A4 if you wanted. Here are some suggestions from our shop:

Fabriano 5 Liscia, size A1 (we can cut it in half for you) £1.85 per sheet. 210gsm, smooth surface:

We also have packs of paper that are slightly bigger than A4 (quarter imperial sheets). Fabriano Artistico Hot pressed 200gsm 38 x 28cm 10 sheets for £8.60. Great for taking home with you for future paintings.

Brushes: Bring the brushes you already have and John suggests the following -

1 x Size 3, synthetic brush, round - for example:

1 x Size 8, synthetic brush, flat - for example:

- Palette or suitable plate

- Pencil and sketchbook – any size.

- Lunch! Please bring a packed lunch with you as there is no café at Griffin Mill.

- All students receive an extra 5% off in our extensive mill shop.
