To celebrate 350 years since the death of Rembrandt Harmenszoon van Rijn, the famous Dutch paint manufacturer, Royal Talens, is hosting ‘The Year of Rembrandt.’ Max Hale is a UK ambassador for the brand and is using the great painter as the inspiration for this portrait workshop. Royal Talens have been making Rembrandt oil and watercolours since 1899.
Rembrandt is generally considered one of the greatest artists in history and certainly the most important in Holland. Best known for ‘The Night Watch’, his portraits are recognised for their realism and lack of vanity which was unusual at that time. He painted vigorously and his one hundred or so self portraits provide a rich visual diary of his life and times over a span of forty years. In his etchings, he explores the strangest facial expressions and twisted features - in his oils, we can trace his progression from a dapper, portrait painter in the 1630’s to ageing artist in his troubled but powerful portraits. He is considered to be the forerunner in expressing himself autobiographically through portraiture, painting his every line and wrinkle. It is an interesting fact that his portraits got bigger over time, following the advent of larger panes of mirrored glass used for his self portraits!
Working from a life model, Max will teach you how to paint using the (almost original) limited palette of the great painter. Royal Talens have kindly sponsored the workshop with free samples, allowing you to try Rembrandt oil colours for yourself. By the end of the workshop, you will have a near completed portrait, which you can continue to work from at home. You will find it fascinating to explore the techniques favoured by Rembrandt.

Max has been teaching at Pegasus Art for four years and has built up a popular following of students. He attended Harrow School of Art where he studied Fine Art and was tutored by Ken Howard OBE RA. He became an apprentice illustrator in a London studio but found his way back to fine art, his true passion. He has been teaching for over twenty five years, whilst exhibiting and painting throughout. He writes for The Artist magazine, among others, and is an Ambassador for Royal Talens. He has had paintings exhibited regionally and in London and has a work on show at the Rijks Museum as part of The Year of Rembrandt. - Selection of brushes, both synthetic and hog. Each make different marks therefore it is good practice to have some of each. Flats in size 4, Synthetic in size 7, Filbert size 5 and Hog in size 10. NB: it is very important to use decent quality brushes. *We have large selection in the shop*
- A rag for wiping brushes, not tissue paper or kitchen roll

Delivery is charged as priced on each order (*International delivery exceptions apply).
Standard Delivery: We aim to process and dispatch orders within two days. However at peak times this may not always be possible so please allow 3-5 days for processing.
Next Working Day (Available Monday-Friday) and Saturday Delivery options are only available for orders received by 12 noon. Once you have placed an order it will be dispatched the same day or the next day depending on the time the order was placed. If you wish to cancel your order after it has been dispatched, you will be charged for both delivery and collection cost.
If you are unavailable when our delivery partner tries to deliver your order, they will usually try to deliver again the next working day or they will drop a card in to offer you a collection from a local collection point. If you should refuse delivery of goods, or are not available to accept the delivery on both delivery attempts, you will be required to cover any extra costs incurred.

You have 28 calendar days to return an item from the date you received it.
To be eligible for a return, your item must be unused and in the same condition that you received it. Your item must be in the original packaging.
Your item needs to have the receipt or proof of purchase.
Once we have received your item and inspected it we will contact you.
If your return is approved, we will initiate an immediate exchange or refund to your credit card (or original method of payment). You will receive the credit within a certain amount of days, depending on your card issuer's policies.
Products returned by you because of a defect will be refunded in full, including a refund of the delivery charges for sending the item to you and the cost incurred by you in returning the item to us.
Products returned by you within the seven-day cooling-off period will be refunded in full, including the cost of sending the item to you. However, you will be responsible for the cost of returning the item to us.
