26th March The Secret Lives of Colour with Kassia St Clair ART TALK
POSTPONED TO 29th OCTOBER 2020
The Secret Life of Colour – Five colourful histories with Kassia St Clair
Thursday 26th March
6 – 8pm
Illustrated Talk & book signing
We are delighted that Kassia St Clair, author of top-ten bestseller The Secret Lives of Colour is coming to Pegasus Art to give an illustrated talk. You may have heard snippets on Radio 4 when it was Book of the Week, you may have seen it’s colourful book cover in Waterstones – and now is your chance to delight in the hidden history of seventy five pigments, revealing fascinating historical and cultural facts that will bowl you over.
What started as a column for Elle Decoration has become a bestselling book, alongside The Golden Thread telling the fascinating history of fabric. Every page is packed with irresistible facts and anecdotes from Turner’s deadly green, Van Gogh and ‘falling hard’ for chrome yellow, ultramarine that was more valuable than gold to our very own Stroud Scarlet, ‘Oliver Cromwell specified that officer’s coats should be dyed scarlet in Gloucestershire using a newly discovered recipe.’
Kassia will focus on the cultural history of five colours. From the controversy surrounding the world’s blackest black to the origins of a blue that inspired Yves Klein. Explore the deadly power of white, the political underpinnings of a special shade of orange and, last but not least, decided whether it’s time we all began to think pink.
Kassia is a freelance journalist and author. She graduated with a first-class honours degree in history and went on to complete a master’s degree at Oxford. She has written for The Economist, House & Garden, Quartz and the New Statesman. She has had column in Elle Decoration since 2013 and was assistant books and arts editor for The Economist.
She has given talks at Dallas Museum of Art, Tate Liverpool, the V&A and the National Portrait Gallery, as well as events at Hay and Bath Festivals, Soho House and Christie’s.
“Even Farrow & Ball don’t know as much about colour as Kassia St Clair,” TLS
“Extraordinarily full and interesting. The real joy of the book lies in the main chapters, where almost every page throws up an unexpected detail and insight. An ideal crib and valuable resource for the design-conscioius and students alike.” Times Literary Supplement
“Charming” The Financial Times
