Learning how to paint a portrait in watercolour

Experienced tutor, Max Hale, will tutor you through some simple methods of using a tricky medium with a challenging subject and you’ll be surprised at how quickly your skills will grow. Knowing the areas on which to concentrate and the areas to have less focus is key. Using a live-sitter you will soon develop confidence and build your skills. Even if you haven’t used watercolour to any great degree, you are very welcome to join this workshop.

About Max

Max has been teaching at Pegasus Art for four years and has built up a popular following of students. He attended Harrow School of Art where he studied Fine Art and was tutored by Ken Howard OBE RA. He became an apprentice illustrator in a London studio but found his way back to fine art, his true passion. He has been teaching for over twenty five years, whilst exhibiting and painting throughout. He writes for The Artist magazine, among others, and is an Ambassador for Royal Talens. He has had paintings exhibited in most areas of the country and many in London his passion to tutor and motivate others is obvious and works in all mediums.

Recommended Equipment List

The shop will be open from 9am, so you will have time to purchase materials before the workshop. Our staff can offer you any advice you need.

-At least two sheets of watercolour paper either ‘NOT’ or ‘Rough’ approximately 16” x 12” (40cm x 30cm) minimum 300gsm.

There are plenty of options to choose from in the shop.

- Masking tape

- A set of watercolour pans or tubes – it’s worth investing in a good quality set.

- A selection of brushes

A half inch flat, one inch flat and round size 12 – 16

- Tissue / toilet roll / kitchen roll for dabbing out colour

- Water pot

- Mixing palette or plate

- 2B pencil to draw out

- Putty rubber

- Sketchbook – plenty to choose from in the shop.

- A packed lunch and water – there is no café at Griffin Mill.

Tea & coffee will be provided throughout the day.

Last day for Next Working Day Delivery and courier service is Friday 20th December.

Delivery is charged as priced on each order (*International delivery exceptions apply).

Standard Delivery: We aim to process and dispatch orders within two days. However at peak times this may not always be possible so please allow 3-5 days for processing.

Next Working Day (Available Monday-Friday) and Saturday Delivery options are only available for orders received by 12 noon. Once you have placed an order it will be dispatched the same day or the next day depending on the time the order was placed. If you wish to cancel your order after it has been dispatched, you will be charged for both delivery and collection cost.

If you are unavailable when our delivery partner tries to deliver your order, they will usually try to deliver again the next working day or they will drop a card in to offer you a collection from a local collection point. If you should refuse delivery of goods, or are not available to accept the delivery on both delivery attempts, you will be required to cover any extra costs incurred.

Once we have received your item and inspected it we will contact you.

If your return is approved, we will initiate an immediate exchange or refund to your credit card (or original method of payment). You will receive the credit within a certain amount of days, depending on your card issuer's policies.


Products returned by you because of a defect will be refunded in full, including a refund of the delivery charges for sending the item to you and the cost incurred by you in returning the item to us.

Products returned by you within the seven-day cooling-off period will be refunded in full, including the cost of sending the item to you. However, you will be responsible for the cost of returning the item to us.
