Lively Travel Sketching & Painting with Simon Roberts
Saturday 19th July 2025
10am – 4pm
Studio One
Pegasus Art – all welcome including beginners
Have you ever sat in a sunlit café and thought, ‘I’d love to be able to catch this moment in a sketchbook – but I don’t know where to start.’ In this workshop, Simon will help you capture scenes and simplify them into loose sketches, brought to life with some watercolour washes. Simon will go through the rudiments of perspective, light and shade and the pros and cons of various travel journals. You will leave with a new confidence, ready to illustrate your next travel adventure whether at home or abroad!
About Simon
Simon worked for many decades as a freelance illustrator working commercially in a wide range of styles both conventional and digital in the UK and Europe. He now enjoys painting predominantly in watercolour. In his opinion, it is the perfect medium for capturing landscapes; whether en plein air or for adding a splash of colour to a sketch in a travel journal. He now lives in the South of France with his wife Monica from where they run painting holidays in France, Spain, Croatia and Morocco with an emphasis on watercolour sketching and painting in personal journals. www.painting-in-france.com
Recommended Art Materials
The shop will be open from 9am, so there is time to purchase art materials before the workshop begins at 10am. All attendees receive 5% off in our shop.
Paper:
- Watercolour block, loose paper or pad. 9” x 12” or 12” x 16” 300gsm NOT (cold pressed) surface. Arches, Fabriano or Saunders Waterford are all recommended. For more economical options, Bockingford or Langton. https://www.pegasusart.co.uk/fabriano-artisti-classic-watercolour-block-300g-not-9x12.ir
Watercolours:
- Artist quality watercolours in small tubes are the best, as these allow you to mix large amounts of colour for washes, ideally in a folding palette. Winsor & Newton, Schmincke or Daniel Smith are among the best quality. https://www.pegasusart.co.uk/winsor-newton-watercolours-individual-colours-in-5ml-tubes.ir
- Suggested colours, as used by Simon (not all are necessary, but useful to know what he uses) Naples yellow, Cadmium yellow, Yellow Ochre, Burnt Sienna, Burnt Umber. Cadmium red, Alizarin crimson, Lime green, Sapo green, Hooker’s green, Cerulean blue, Cobalt blue, Tropical Pthalo blue, French ultramarine, Quinacrodone magenta, Payne’s grey. Plus a tube of Zinc white gouache paint.
Brushes:
- Round, watercolour brushes in sizes 4,8 & 12. It’s important that these brushes are of good quality and that they form a point when wet. Sables are expensive, so synthetic ones are a good substitute. Simon actually uses a set of 3 travel brushes (S, M & L). https://www.pegasusart.co.uk/da-vinci-series-1573-pocket-travel-brush-round-synthetic.ir
