Making Marks – an introduction to Linocut with Liz Freedman
Tuesday 18th November 2025
10am – 4pm
Attic Studio
All abilities welcome, especially beginners
This beginner’s linocut course will introduce you to the fundamentals of linocut printmaking, including sketching for print, carving, inking and printing techniques.
You will begin the course exploring the different mark making techniques you can achieve with lino and follow this with some time to sketch out ideas for a linocut print. Liz will guide you along the way helping you to work independently and make appropriate decisions for printmaking. Liz will bring along some stimulus but you are welcome to bring sketchbooks and images of your own as well.
After some time sketching, you will learn how to transfer your sketches to lino and how to use the specialised tools to create interesting marks, ink the block and create your own print. This is a great workshop for anyone looking to try linocut for the first time and should hopefully get you excited about the wonderful discipline of relief printmaking.
Recommended Equipment List
The shop will be open from 9am, so you will have time to purchase materials beforehand. Some equipment is quite specialist so it might be worth ordering in advance if you can.
- Sketchbook – this can be any size that you like to work in. If you prefer to sketch on loose paper this is fine as well but cartridge paper is advisable.
- Pencils HB, 4B, 6B
- Pencil sharpener and rubber
- Lino tools https://www.pegasusart.co.uk/lino-cutting-set-handle-10-assorted-cutting-blades.ir
- Lino blocks x 2 in 150mm x 10mm https://www.pegasusart.co.uk/lino-blocks-32mm-thick-various-sizes.ir
-Tracing paper – 1 or 2 sheets of A4 is plenty
- Bring an apron or shirt with you to protect your clothes
Liz will be supplying printmaking paper and relief inks and can recommend good paper to use should you with to continue to explore print. For this workshop we will be working in black and white but I can recommend coloured inks to use.
Please bring a packed lunch, water and snacks with you. Tea and coffee are provided. All attendees receive 5% off in our shop.
About Liz
Liz is a printmaker from Gloucestershire. Working primarily in collograph, mono print and linocut, her work focuses on the landscape of the British Isles, from rugged cliff faces to rolling Cotswold hills. Working from her home studio, she creates prints that explore the shapes, lines and textures of the landscape around her, sometimes focusing on the small details and other times trying to capture a sense of place.
Having received a first class honours degree from Manchester Metropolitan in Fine Art Printmaking she has worked as a secondary school art teacher for 15 years. In September 2024 she finally took the leap and became a full time artist and hasn’t looked back. In her first year working as an artist she has exhibited at the Royal Academy Summer show, Ironbridge Printmaking 2024, the Small Works winter show at Spring gallery, Cheltenham Open Studios 2025 and has won two en plein air competitions at Painswick Rococo Gardens. She runs regular bespoke and group workshops and her work can be found on her Instagram and website.
