Description
How to paint a Butterfly
An entomological watercolour painting workshop with Cath Hodsman
Saturday 16th July 2022
10am – 4pm Attic Studio
All abilities welcome
Butterflies are amongst our most well-known and well-loved insects. This watercolour painting workshop gives those of us who are fascinated by these ethereal creatures, the chance to study them and paint them in watercolour.
This unique and absorbing workshop is aimed at both lovers of painting and entomology, especially butterflies. You don’t have to be an expert in either, but you need to be fascinated by both!! This absorbing and enjoyable day will give participants the chance to study different types of butterflies in a way that they have never been able to before.
Each student will have the use of high-powered microscopes to study the anatomical beauty of these delicate creatures. Cath and students will discuss how butterflies taste their food, how they eat their food, how they create those beautiful patterns on their wings, how they protect themselves from predators and to generally, pay homage to these fascinating and iconic insects. Participants will then use the microscopes, ethical specimens and macro photographic material to produce a detailed and unique watercolour painting.
About Cath
Cath is a Cotswolds-based entomological artist, illustrator, teacher and conservationist who specialises in painting, sketching and studying insects. The raison d’etre behind my art is to aim for anatomical accuracy in every artistic study I produce. I believe this is the best and most fulfilling way to connect, value and ultimately, to protect insects - I want more folks to hug-a-bug...!
In my unique and fun art workshops I teach folks how to understand and then use art to capture the hidden beauty, intricacy and design-perfection held within their secret world. Each student has exclusive use of their own dedicated microscope, magnifying glasses and macro photographs, as well as access to my extensive insect (ethically sourced) specimen collection, to study their beauty.
Through my teaching, I have been made an Associate Member of the Royal Society of Biology. I have also worked in partnership with many other wonderful organisations such as The Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew; The Royal Horticultural Society; The Fields Studies Council; The Queen’s Gallery, Buckingham Palace; The National Trust, The Wetlands Trust, The Wildlife Trusts, The Natural History Museum, London, etc....
I have also illustrated for Countryfile magazine, Leisure Painter magazine, the Amateur Entomologists’ Society’s journal, the British Beekeepers’ Association magazine.
