12th Dec Powerful Seascapes (Mixed Media) with Mel Cormack-Hicks
Powerful Seascapes – mixed media, with Mel Cormack-Hicks
Saturday 12th December 2020
10am – 4pm
All abilities welcome
What will I learn?
How to explore and experiment with freedom. How to create movement using layers.
Mel will show you how to create powerful seascapes with her experimental multimedia techniques. Her methods are very hands on, so be prepared to get messy. You will experiment with materials and leave with new exciting skills that will allow you to create powerful seascapes that contain the magic ingredient….movement.
What will I achieve?
Learn how to create layers of light and colour that will give your painting movement and depth. You’ll return home with many mixed media experiments, sketches and paintings.
A Fine Art painting degree from Cheltenham in the mid 90’s allowed Mel to find her artistic voice. Following this, she spent twenty years teaching secondary school pupils and just three years ago decided to become a full time professional artist. Her first solo show at Chapel Arts in Cheltenham launched her new career. She has exhibited at ‘The Other Art Fair’ a Saatchi affiliated show and is represented by Marine House at Beer. She is full of energy and enthusiasm for her new audience of students and is loving sharing her creative process.
Mel’s suggestion is to bring a selection of materials, both dry and wet. Then you can try out mixed media techniques too. She does not insist that you have everything from the list below – just bring what you can. *This workshop is not suitable for oil paints.*
All attendees receive and extra 5% off in our shop.
All of the materials below are available in our extensive art shop – please ask us if you need any advice.
Recommended Equipment List
Quick Drying Materials
Bring materials that can dry quickly: acrylic ink, watercolour, watercolour pencils, gouache and acrylic paints. Anything we can mix with water to make it more fluid. Daler Rowney inks, suggested colours: Prussian blue, Payne’s Grey, Cadmium Red, White and Sap Green
Watercolour pencils: https://www.pegasusart.co.uk/derwent-pencils-71-derwent-inktense-pencils-outliner-pencil.ir Acrylic paints: https://www.pegasusart.co.uk/amsterdam-standard-acrylic-paints-120ml-tubes.ir
Candles, oil pastels and masking fluid if you would like to try it. Winsor & Newton is my favourite: https://www.pegasusart.co.uk/winsor-newton-masking-fluid-for-watercolours.ir
Pencils, chalk pastels and a glue stick.
Pipette (acrylic inks have these in the top), brushes, palette knife, straw to blow through! If you have one, bring a hairdryer to get the paint and ink moving!
Bring anything you already have – any format. My preference is Pink Pig – a square, ringbound sketchbook available at Pegasus Art. I’m happy for you to work in your sketchbook all day, but if you would like to work larger, there are some suggestions below.
Thick card, hot press watercolour paper (the smooth type), wooden boards or mount board (these will need a layer of gesso on them – ask Mel), You could bring canvas, but I find that the materials don’t flow across the surface very easily. The size you bring is up to you, but if you do decide to bring something large, bring smaller sizes too! https://www.pegasusart.co.uk/a3-mountboard-pack-8-ivory-1250mic.ir
Bring five print outs of seascapes that have meaning to you. They could be several images of the same location from different angles OR different images. The printouts should be A5 size minimum. You can bring photographs, but please note, you might be be painting on top of them and possibly tearing them up.
Don’t forget to bring a packed lunch and water – there is no café at Griffin Mill.
Tea & coffee will be provided throughout the day.
