Description

Soulful Skies with Emma Burleigh

Saturday 8th November 2025

10am – 4pm

Attic Studio

All abilities welcome, including beginners

From soft orange sunrises to deep Prussian-blue nights, the sky is ever changing and always there for us, offering inspiration and fascination to those who look. Over his lifetime, the artist William Turner filled hundreds of sketchbooks with delicate watercolour studies of cloudy, moody, ethereal and atmospheric skies. In ancient times the skies foretold the moods of the gods, and from the age of Stonehenge to the present day, the sky has always been a stimulus for questions, imaginings, and interpretations.

You will explore the unique qualities of watercolour to convey atmosphere and feeling. You'll experiment with this exquisite medium in combination with a mix of simple household materials to create skies from observation and imagination. Suitable for complete beginners and also for those wishing to develop their capacity for expression and experimentation in watercolour.

Recommended Equipment List

Paper:

-Watercolour paper - loose paper in A4 and A3 ish sizes, or a pad of any size you like but ideally A3 ish (or bigger). Go for 300gsm, NOT surface (cold pressed), ideally.

Watercolours:

- watercolours tubes, or if you prefer, pans will do. Winsor & Newton, Schmincke, or Daniel Smith are good brands. Cotman is a decent, more economical option. Make sure you have the 3 primary colours, red, yellow and blue - ideally two hues of each, and bring a handful of other colours that you like. A little watercolour goes a long way so you can buy the smallest tubes if you want. If you already have paints of another brand bring them along too and I can tell you if they’re any good!

Brushes:

- Two or three round, watercolour brushes in sizes 4, 8, 10 & 12 or thereabouts. Plus, any other brushes you may already have of any shapes and sizes, including a couple of old brushes that won't mind a bit of rough treatment.

- Ideally a ½" or 1" brush for covering large areas, any shape is OK, square/chisel is best. I can provide a few spares if needed.

Other:

- A pencil, sharpener and ruler

- Masking tape

- Watercolour palette / any old ceramic plate (but it needs to be a white one)

- Kitchen towel/tissues

- Plenty of sheets of scrap paper – A4 ish (or any size will do). And 5 sheets of A4 or larger cartridge paper (if you’d prefer to be economical with your watercolour paper, you can substitute cartridge paper for when we do warmups and games).

- 2 x jam jars/water pots

- Ideally, bring an apron or wear clothes suitable for an art studio, and bring a bag or portfolio for taking your work home at the end of the session.

- If you wish, bring along some images, poems, photos and so on, on the theme of skies, for inspiration!

Please bring a packed lunch, water and snacks with you. Tea and coffee are available in the studio. Attendees receive 5% off in our shop.
