Skyscapes in Oil with Georgina Potter
Saturday 11th January 2020
10am – 4pm Attic Studio
Some basic oil painting experience required
Kindly sponsored by Cranfield Colours
Learn how to paint incredible skies with guidance from new tutor, Georgina Potter.
We are delighted that Georgina Potter will be teaching our students how to successfully depict the sky in landscape using oils. This workshop is best suited for those who have previously used oil paints and both amateur and professional painters are very welcome.
Georgie will start the day with a demonstration, working from photographs. She is using Cranfield Artist oils, but you can bring or purchase whichever oil paints you favour. This workshop will teach you the basics for plein air painting, working at speed with a loose style.
You will learn about the following skills on this workshop:
-How the sky affects the landscape below – getting the right tonal values
- Comparing warm and cold colours in a landscape
- Working out composition
- Choosing a colour scheme and palette
- Working in a loose manner from thin to thick paint with big brushes
- Assessing your own work
- Final touches
Recommended materials list:
Georgie recommends Cranfield oil paints in either student or professional artist quality. This is her ‘go-to’ basic oil painting palette:
Titanium White – bring two small tubes or a larger one, you will use a lot! Cadmium Yellow genuine, Cadmium lemon yellow, Cadmium Red, Alizarin Crimson, Cobalt Blue, French Ultramarine Blue, Kings Blue deep, Pthalo Turquoise, Raw Sienna, Lamp Black. Additional colours; Indian Yellow, Unbleached Titanium, Cadmium Orange.
Bring a selection of brushes, in particular brushes over 1” wide and up to 2” wide. We have a large selection in the shop.
Georgie uses a 50/50 mix of linseed oil and Cranfield Non Aromatic thinner. https://www.pegasusart.co.uk/spectrum-nonaromatic-thinner.ir
Brush cleaner – turps, white spirit or Zest It
A selection of canvas boards or primed MDF boards 30cm x 40cm. We can recommend a pre-stretched Loxley canvas costing £9.34 – we have plenty of stock at Pegasus Art. Georgie suggests keeping the cost of your canvas to a minimum so that you don’t mind making mistakes.
After winning the Diana Brooks Award, Georgie was encouraged to focus painting full time. In 2011 she moved to Wiltshire and was inspired by the changing palette of the countryside. “I work fast and instinctively in oils, mostly from life or as a reaction to the landscape around me onto small canvas boards and then I often work these up into bigger paintings in my studios. I try to make every brush stroke matter so that I can be economical with detail, and I frequently rub areas out and start again.” www.georginapotter.com
